EU AI Act

Also known as: Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, AI Act

The European Union's AI regulation, in force since 1 August 2024. Tiered risk classification (unacceptable, high, limited, minimal) with the strictest obligations on high-risk systems. Provisions phase in through 2026–2027.

How this publication uses it

For procurement, the high-risk classification is the operational concern. Article 9 (risk management), Article 10 (data quality), Article 12 (audit logs), Article 16 (provider obligations) and Article 50 (transparency for genAI output) drive the most contract-bearing requirements. Vendors selling into the EU must demonstrate conformity, not just claim it.
